Trapped Deer Rescued From Iron Gate

Firecrews have freed a deer which got stuck in a wrought iron gate in Winchester after running across St Cross Road on Friday April the 15th.

They were alerted by a member of the public just before 2.30pm - control operators immediately mobilised Hampshire Fire and Rescue Animal Rescue Specialist Anton Phillips to the scene. 

Watch Manager Phillips said:

"The Roe deer was trapped by its hips in the wrought iron gate of a private property having just crossed the busy main road. 

"I restrained and calmed the animal by placing most of the deer into a sleeping bag before going on to using a car jack to spread the bars of the gate enough to release it. 

"I am pleased to say that other than being stunned by the ordeal and receiving grazes on it’s flanks the roe buck was unharmed.

"Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service reminds the public that any animal, small or large, that is trapped or in distress can be potentially dangerous.

"It is extremely important to stay quiet in the vicinity of a wild animal that has become trapped to give it the best possible chance of survival. 

"I urge members of the public to request the immediate assistance of specialists to rescue the animal, rather than attempting to do so themselves."

The male deer was then taken to nearby St Catherines Hill Nature Reserve in Winchester before being released back into the wild.
