Detectives are investigating after a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted as she walked home from a uni fresher's night out in Southampton.
The teenager had been at the Unit Nightclub in St Marys Road when she left to walk home on her own at about 2.15am.
As she walked along she got to the junction of Cumberland Place and Kings Park Road, she noticed a man about a metre behind her.
She crossed the road but he followed. She then turned down Bellevue Road and then into London Road. The
man continued to follow her.
As got about halfway towards Rockstone Place she saw a white saloon car with a group of young men and women around it chatting and laughing. She spoke briefly to the girls as she passed.
She then walked along Carlton Place towards Rockstone Place, opposite the junction she saw the man was still very close behind her and she got out her phone to pretend to make a phone call in the hope he would walk past.
He didn’t, and instead he spoke briefly to her, and pushed her against some railings and indecently assaulted her.
She called out loudly for help and he ran off towards Bedford Place as two men arrived to see what had happened.
The attacker is described as white, aged in his early to mid 20s with a clear complexion and brown hair which was straight and short. He wore blue jeans and what’s thought to be white trainers.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information about the crime to contact them. They are also keen to hear from anyone who thinks they saw the man following the woman.
In particular they would like to trace the group of young men and women by the white car and the two men who came to assist the victim when she screamed out as they are likely to be important witnesses.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Shirley CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
