Police are investigating after a 30-year-old man from Latvia was subjected to a racist attack in a Southampton park.

The man was walking through Palmerston Park near the back of Que Pasa when a man who was with two other men spoke to him asking for a cigarette. When he replied he didn’t have one the man made a comment about his accent and two of the men attacked him. He fell to the ground where he was kicked and punched.

The victim had to be treated in hospital for a deep cut to his head which needed stitches. He also had bruising to his face, arm and leg.

It happened at around 3.30am on Sunday, June 26. The main attacker is said to be aged in his early 20s, of medium build with short hair.

A 31-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on police bail while enquiries continue until Thursday, July 21.
