Man Dies 3 Years After Gibraltar Robbery

It's emerged a 59-year-old security guard from Hampshire has died three years after suffering serious head injuries during the robbery of a cigarette container at Gibraltar port.

Jeffery Lewis died at his home in Waterlooville on October 5.

A Royal Gibraltar Police spokesman said three men local to the enclave had been arrested on suspicion of murder and released on bail until a date in January.

Chief Inspector Emilio Acris said:

"The late Mr Lewis was the victim of a very serious assault in Gibraltar in November 2008.

"He was transferred back to the UK as a result of his injuries for some treatment and remained in the UK, where he died in October.

"Because of the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Lewis, there was an inquiry and this has been transferred to a murder inquiry.''

Mr Lewis suffered serious head injuries during the raid on the container in North Mole, Gibraltar, on November 7, 2008.

A total of 380 boxes of different brands of cigarettes worth £100,000 were stolen.

He was transferred to a specialist neurological unit at a hospital in Cadiz, Spain, in a critical condition before being brought back to the UK.

A total of five people were arrested, leading to three men being charged in connection with the robbery and assault and they are currently facing trial in Gibraltar.
