A 32-year-old man was remanded in custody today charged with the murder of an elderly woman in her country cottage more than three years ago.

Georgina Edmonds, 77, was tortured and bludgeoned to death at her home in Brambridge, Hampshire, in January 2008.

Matthew Hamlen, of Hamilton Road, Eastleigh, Hants spoke only to confirm his name and address when he made the brief appearance at Southampton Magistrates' Court.

Dressed in a black hooded top and jeans, he was flanked by security guards for the hearing that lasted less than three minutes.

No plea to the charge was entered.

Magistrates adjourned the case for a further hearing at Winchester Crown Court on February 22.

Mrs Edmonds was found dead by her son Harry and a family friend after he came home from work on January 11 2008.

She lived in the grounds of her son's home and it is believed she did not lock her doors during the day.

A post-mortem examination found she died from extensive head injuries.
