On Air Now
Capital Breakfast with Jono and Emily 6am - 10am
A new helipad at Southampton General Hospital is now ready for use.
Up until now, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance had to land in a field about a mile away in Lordshill, and seriously ill patients had to be transported the final distance by road ambulance.
Now patients can be flown directly to the hospital.
The helipad has been built on the roof of the hospital car park. Work started in July, and it officially opened on Thursday November the 17th after safety tests were completed, including a test flight.
