New research shows nearly half of car owners in Portsmouth are spending 10 percent of their monthly income on cars they use for less than an hour a day.
The study by Europcar UK reveals that having a car is fast becoming an expensive luxury for people in the city - the cost of motor insurance has risen on average by £40 in the last year and 80 percent of drivers in Portsmouth say they spend up to £600 a year on insurance.
Despite this, nearly two thirds of those questioned in Portsmouth say public transport couldn't replace their car, admitting they find it too costly, inconvenient and unreliable.
