Woman Killed In Police Pursuit Crash

A car involved in a crash with a taxi in which a woman died was being followed by police at the time.

The green Vauxhall Astra was in Glasgow's Springhill Industrial Estate when it was signalled to stop by a marked police van at around 1.30am on Sunday.

When the car failed to do so, officers switched on their van's blue lights and followed the vehicle, signalling that they wanted it to stop.

The car drove along Edinburgh Road and was then involved in a collision with a black Hackney taxi at the traffic lights at Stepps Road and Springboig Road.

Emergency services attended but the 57-year-old woman who was travelling in the cab died at the scene.

Police Scotland have now named her as Mary Laurie, also known as Marie, from the Easterhouse area.

A 52-year-old man, also a passenger in the taxi, was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The man driving the taxi, 50, suffered minor injuries, as did the 20-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall and his 16-year-old female passenger.

Police said a 20-year-old man will be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal in connection with alleged road traffic offences.

The force added that the matter has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner, as is "standard procedure''.

Mrs Laurie's relatives said: "She will be sadly missed by all the family.''
