Woman killed after M74 collision between bus and lorry

A minibus passenger has died after a crash with a lorry on a motorway.

The 74-year-old woman was travelling in the orange public transport bus when it was involved in a collision with a white Renault HGV.

The incident happened on the M74 southbound carriageway near Junction 6 at Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, at 4.05pm on Wednesday.

The woman was seriously injured and was taken to Wishaw General Hospital by ambulance where she later died.

Two other bus passengers, women aged 78 and 77, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the same hospital for treatment and have since been discharged.

Paramedics treated the bus driver, 63, at the scene for minor injuries.

The driver of lorry, a 59-year-old man, was not injured.

Police Scotland is appealing for witnesses and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Sergeant Stewart Dyer said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw the crash, including those with any dashcam footage, and also the drivers of two cars, one blue and one red, who were in the area round the time of the crash.

"Their information could prove vital to the investigation.

"Witnesses or anyone with information can contact Motherwell Road Policing Unit via 101, quoting reference number 2405 of the 24 October 2018."
