A man attacked by a gang with a hammer and axe was the victim of mistaken identity, police believe.
The 33-year-old was in a house in Rannoch Drive, Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, when three men forced their way into the property and assaulted him with the weapons.
The trio ran out of the house and fled in a black car after the attack, which happened at about 3.15am on Saturday.
The victim was treated for his injuries at Wishaw General Hospital and has since been allowed home.
Detective Constable Graham McAdam said: ``I do not believe that this was a random attack, however I think that the 33-year-old man was not the intended target and that he was the victim of mistaken identity.
``I urge anyone who has any information that could assist our inquiries to contact Wishaw CID immediately.''
Police can be reached via the non-emergency number 101.
