A teenager has been seriously injured after he was attacked as he and his girlfriend walked home from a night out.

The couple, both aged 19, were walking on a footpath near to Shottskirk Road, Shotts when a small silver car pulled up beside them.

A man got out of the car and attacked the man with a bladed weapon and sprayed the woman with an unknown substance.

He then got back into the car which drove off in the direction of Dyfrig Street.

The couple were both taken to Wishaw General Hospital where the man is being treated for injuries to his head and body, with medical staff describing his condition as stable.

The woman was released after treatment.

Police are appealing for information about the incident, being treated as attempted murder, which happened at around 3.15am on Sunday.

Detective Constable Mark Cummings said: "This was a violent attack which has left this young man with serious injuries.

"We have yet to establish a motive for the attack, which we are treating as attempted murder, but know that the couple had been returning from a night out in Shotts town centre and had left there around 3am.

"As such I am keen to speak to anyone who had either seen the couple walking home or anyone who saw a small, silver car in the vicinity either before or after the attack took place."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wishaw CID via telephone number 101 quoting incident number 0822 of 16 September 2018 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
