A man has been released without charge as police dropped an investigation into the reported rape of a woman in the back of a taxi.

It was alleged a 23-year-old woman was attacked by a driver in Motherwell on October 18 after he refused to take her home.

A 42-year-old man was arrested, but released pending further inquiries.

Police Scotland have now said officers are no longer investigating the incident.

A spokesman said: "Following our media appeal for information, a 42-year-old man was released without charge and police are no longer investigating this incident.

"Thanks to everyone for their assistance."
