A murder inquiry has started after a man's body was discovered at a stretch of water.

Darryl Fitch was recovered from Locher Water near Crosslee Road in Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, at around 7.55pm yesterday.

A post mortem examination has been carried out and officers are treating the 43-year-old's death as murder.

It is thought Mr Fitch, from Paisley, may have been camping in the area since Friday July 10.

Detective Inspector John Malcolm said: "At this time, I would ask anyone who was in the area over the last few days to contact us. It's possible you could have information which could prove useful in helping us piece together Darryl's movements prior to his death.

"It's imperative we find out how Darryl came about his injuries and that those responsible are traced and held to account. If you have any knowledge or information in connection with this incident, please do get in touch.

"I know that crimes such as these can cause concern in the local community and I would like to reassure them that additional officers will be on patrol in the area. Anyone with any concerns or information can speak to these officers.''

Forensic officers are carrying out a search of the area and CCTV images are also being checked.

Mr Fitch's relatives have been informed of his death, police said.
