Two masked men were behind a targeted shooting that left the victim in a critical condition in hospital, police said.
The pair forced their way into a flat in Wellshot Road, in the Shettleston area of Glasgow, where they gunned down a 42-year-old man inside the property.
The two then fled in a small dark car following the attack at around 8.10pm on Saturday.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he is being treated for serious injuries.
Police Scotland has appealed for information over the incident, which officers are treating as attempted murder.
Detective Inspector Alasdair Barlow, leading the inquiry, said: "We believe that this was not a random attack and that the victim was the intended target.
"Nevertheless, a team of detectives and specialist officers are currently in the area carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this incident.
"It is vital that we catch those responsible for this despicable act of violence and I appeal to members of the public to come forward with any information, however slight it might appear, in order that we can identify the men involved and hold them accountable for their actions."
Anyone with information is asked to contact CID officers at Helen Street police office on the 101 number.
Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
