A man was punched and kicked by several people after intervening to stop his friend being attacked by the group.

The unprovoked attack followed a verbal row with the 10-strong group in Glasgow on Friday night.

The violence left the 23-year-old victim with serious injuries to his face and hand.

The assault happened in the Woodlands area of the city shortly after 10pm.

Detectives said the man was walking along Woodlands Road with his friends when they passed a group of men and women and a row broke out.

The victim and his friends walked away, but the other group followed, continuing to argue.

When the victim turned around and noticed that his friend was about to be attacked by the group, he ran back to help his friend but was punched and kicked by several in the group.

The suspects then fled in both directions along Woodlands Road.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to facial injuries and a broken finger. He has been released but will need further treatment.

The group of suspects is said to have included around eight men and two women.

The men are described as being white and around 18-to-19 years old. They were wearing black suit jackets, white shirts with black ties, black trousers and black shoes.

Detective Constable Jas Juttla said: "This was a disgraceful and unprovoked attack on an innocent young man who has been left with serious facial injuries and a broken finger.

"This type of violent behaviour will not be tolerated and extensive CCTV and door to door inquiries are ongoing to trace the individuals involved in carrying out this cowardly attack."

Officers said the area would have been busy with people at the time and they have appealed for information. Drivers with dashcam footage which captured the incident are also being sought.

DC Juttla added: "I would particularly like to hear from two men who assisted the victim and his friends."
