The 23-year-old was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the blast in Newmains and died of the injuries he sustained, police confirmed.
He has not yet been identified.
A police spokeswoman said: "The 23-year-old died in hospital last night. There is still a 26-year-old man in hospital who is seriously injured."
The explosion happened at the derelict Newmains Pastoral Centre on Bonkle Road around 1.30pm on Thursday.
