A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a collision which left another man in a critical condition in hospital.
The incident, in which the pedestrian in his fifties was hit by a car, happened at around 9.45pm on Sunday in Edinburgh's Grassmarket area.
He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following the collision.
Caoimhin McSherry, of Edinburgh, faced a number of charges, including one of attempted murder, when he appeared at the city's sheriff court earlier.
The 22-year-old is also accused of six contraventions of the 1988 Road Traffic Act, including failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.
He made no plea or declaration and was released on bail, the Crown office said.
