A 12-year-old boy has died after getting into trouble in Scotland's longest river.

Emergency services were called to the River Tay near Stanley, Perth and Kinross, on Sunday to reports of a child in distress.

He was pulled from the water and airlifted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.

The boy couldn't be saved and died in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police Scotland said inquiries are ongoing and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A spokesman added: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very tragic time."
