Driver In A Serious Condition In Hospital

A driver is in a serious condition in hospital after a crash with a tractor on a country road.

Five people were travelling in a grey Honda CRV when it collided with the tractor at around 3.15pm yesterday on the A71 near Caldermill, South Lanarkshire.

The tractor was returning from Strathaven when it appears it lost control and hit the Honda, police said.

The 59-year-old driver and a female passenger were trapped in the car and had to be cut free by firefighters.

The man was taken to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow with a head injury and is said to be in a serious condition.

The woman was taken to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride for treatment and was later released.

The three other passengers in the car suffered minor injuries and were treated at Crosshouse Hospital near Kilmarnock before being released.

The driver of the tractor was uninjured.

The road was closed for several hours while police examined the scene and officers are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact them
