A six-year-old boy is in hospital with a head injury after he was hit by a van as he crossed the road on his way to school.
The child was crossing Dalry Road near to its junction with Anderson Drive in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, when he was struck by the white vehicle at around 8.55am on Monday.
He was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where he is being treated for a head injury.
Hospital staff described his condition as stable.
Police are keen to trace the driver of the van who stopped at the scene but left before officers arrived.
Sergeant Ian Thornton, of the Road Policing Department, said: "The driver of the van did stop after the incident and spoke to an adult who had been with the young boy.
"The driver had left the scene before police arrival and I would ask him to contact police regarding this incident.
"I would also ask any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information that may assist our inquiries, to contact us at Irvine Police Office through 101, quoting incident number 0672 of March 4."
