A 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being punched in the head by a man during an unprovoked attack near a skate park.
The assault happened at around 9.15pm on Saturday on the road between Kingholm Quay and Dumfries.
While walking back towards the town with friends, the youth was spoken to by people inside a silver car.
A woman was driving and a man was the front seat passenger.
Without warning, the man leaned out the car window and punched the victim to the face.
The victim fled but needed treatment at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for his injuries.
Constable Nancy Dickson at Dumfries said: "This appears to be an unprovoked assault on a 15-year-old boy and has resulted in the victim requiring hospital treatment for his injuries.
"I would ask anyone who witnessed the assault or knows the identity of the occupants of the vehicle to contact police on the 101 number."
