Fifteen teams will take part in the 2nd NE1 Zapcat Grand Prix on the River Tyne this weekend.

Last year was the first year NE1 hosted the NE1 Zapcat powerboat grand prix and the spectacular two day racing event took the city by storm attracting crowds of over 25,000 and delivering an average 56% boost to businesses on the Quayside.

This year, over 15 teams of power boat enthusiasts will race a circuit between the Tyne and Millennium Bridges in an event which is being sponsored for the 2nd year, by NE1 Ltd.

NE1's Newcastle City Marina has provided the platform to host this exciting boating event in the heart of the Quayside, giving visitors a fantastic viewpoint to watch the racing heats.

The Zapcat powerboats are fast, light weight and extremely manoeuvrable (pulling 3Gs in the turns) and produce adrenaline fuelled powerboat racing which some say is like Formula One racing on the river.

Seven teams compete per heat, with 13 heats and 2 finals on each day, with the aim of winning the NE1 Zapcat Grand Prix trophy and building their position in the Zapcat Championship league.

This year, the Zapcat Championship culminates in the last race and awards ceremony at Anglesey on 28th September.
