Tyneside Walk Of Fame

A Hollywood-style 'walk of fame' is set to launch on Tyneside and we're being asked to nominate Local Heroes.

NewcastleGateshead Local Heroes will take the form of a series of bronze plaques placed around the Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides.

It will honour current and past individuals, either from or with strong links to the area, and that have made a significant contribution to NewcastleGateshead or the wider world.

Nominations are open from today until Monday 30th September.

Councillor Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said:
"Newcastle has nurtured many hundreds of talented, inspiring and notable individuals over the years, from scientists to sports personalities.

This is a wonderful way to permanently celebrate their achievements and I'd strongly encourage local residents and businesses to nominate who they think we should include on the plaques."

Gateshead Council cabinet member for culture, Councillor Linda Green, said:
"Here in Gateshead we have seen some truly magnificent developments - we host world-class athletics and welcome international artists daily at both Sage Gateshead and BALTIC.

Local Heroes will focus on our brilliant people, those who have made a difference to life in Gateshead, and we hope the public will get behind the nomination process so local stars can truly shine."

The project will sit at the heart of one of NewcastleGateshead's most popular visitor attractions, the Quayside, forming part of the already vibrant offer for leisure and business tourists to the destination.

Plaques will be placed along the stretch of pavement from BALTIC to the Swing Bridge.

Across the river, the plaques will continue along the Quayside to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Nominations will be put to a panel who will then select which individuals will be honoured in the first installation of 20 plaques in October.

More plaques will be added every year.

Nominations should be written in 50 words or less, why an individual should be considered to receive this honour, based upon the nomination criteria and can be made:
