The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh met thousands of carers and volunteers at a Northumberland castle made famous by the Harry Potter films today...
The Royal couple were greeted by the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, their son Earl Percy and football hero Alan Shearer, in his role as Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland, as they passed through the gates of Alnwick Castle.
Around eight thousand people were invited to the spectacular garden and castle which doubles as the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two films of the Harry Potter series.
Volunteers and carers from a range of good causes were invited by the Duchess, who is Lord Lieutenant of the county.
Earlier the Queen opened a new youth hostel in the town
