North Shields-born Tony Scott, the man who directed Top Gun and Crimson Tide, has died after jumping from a bridge in America
A coroner in America has said the 68 year old younger brother of director Ridley Scott killed himself in Los Angeles.
He was seen parking his car on the Vincent Thomas Bridge and jumping into the water below at about 12:30pm local time.
His body was recovered by police from the harbour.
The British film-maker was born in North Shields and studied at Grangefield School, West Hartlepool College of Art and Sunderland Art School
His other big films include True Romance and Enemy of the State.
