Search and rescue teams are looking for 19 year old Luke Pearce, who went missing after going out drinking with friends in Durham
The student hasn't been seen since the early hours of Sunday morning.
He was last seen around 1.30am walking along the river bank and a member of staff at Durham University contacted the police after concerns were raised by fellow students.
Police search teams are currently on the riverbanks in the city and are being assisted by Weardale and Teesdale Search and Rescue, the Fire Service and air support.
Luke is described as white, 6ft 2in with short ginger hair.
He was wearing a blue polo shirt, blue jeans and white trainers and may have been wearing a silver chain with a red cross.
His friends have said this is completely out of character and police have classed his disappearance as high risk.
Chief Inspector Andy Huddleston said:
"We are very concerned for Luke as this is completely out of character and there has been no trace of him since the early hours of Sunday morning. He hasn't responded to any attempts to contact him and his phone has not been traced.
If anyone has seen him or if they saw a young man matching his description in Durham on Saturday night I would ask them to contact us as soon as possible on 101."
