Tributes are being paid to 60 year old Colin Bird who was knocked down and killed on the Coast Road in Wallsend.
It happened at 11.40pm, on Friday, March 28, eastbound on the Coast Road, Wallsend, at the slip road for Battle Hill.
Colin Bird from Wallsend, was struck by a car on the road and died.
Mr Bird and his wife Maureen celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in February and have four children - three boys and a girl - and four grandchildren - two girls and two boys.
He served in the army for 22-years but opted for a change of pace to his life and was working as a cashier at a local petrol station when he died.
Maureen says the close knit family will pull together to get through what they describe as a difficult time.
She said:
"Colin was a very outgoing person, really sociable with lots of friends. He was loyal, honest and hardworking.
Losing Colin has come as such a shock to us all, it was so out of the blue and sudden, and this is a really difficult time for us. I'd like to thank everyone, all of our family and friends and everyone who has sent their best wishes and cards, for all of their support.
We're a really close family who live close to each other so we are spending lots of time together to try to get through this. We're all going to really miss him."
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision, specifically anyone who saw a silver Audi travelling eastbound on the A1058 Coast Road from Newcastle and taking the Battle Hill exit around the time of the collision.
Sergeant Jason Ryder, from Northumbria Police Motor Patrols, said:
"Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Bird at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.
We're continuing to make enquiries into the collision to establish what has happened and any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to get in touch with police.
In particular we're keen to hear from anyone who saw a silver Audi travelling in the area at the time the incident took place."
A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the collision and has been bailed pending further enquiries.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 1401 28/03/14, for the attention of Northumbria Police Motor Patrols.
