Man Hit By Train In Heaton

A man has died after being hit by a train near a busy Heaton railway track.

Trains were suspended on the East Coast Mainline after a train driver reported the death at around 8.25am.

The body was found near the line in the Heaton area of Newcastle.

British Transport Police and Northumbria Police are not being treating as suspicous.

Trains were halted as passengers had to make a U-turn back to their stations. Replacement buses were provided.

A spokesman for East Coast Mainline said: “A body has been found near the line in the Heaton area. Emergency services are at the scene and the trains have been suspended.

“A report about the incident first came into the control room at around 8.25am from a Northern Trains driver.”

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers from British Transport Police are currently dealing with an incident near to Benfield Road Bridge in Newcastle after receiving reports of a train striking a male on the tracks at 8.26am today.
 
“The male has been pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
