A 46 year old man is being questioned after a woman's body was discovered at the home they shared in County Durham on Christmas Eve.
Officers discovered 48-year-old Lesley Caile's body and an injured man at her home in Hunwick, near Crook, on Monday morning.
Ms Caile worked at Durham County Council's Children's and Young People's Services Department and had two grown-up children and three grandchildren.
The injured man is now stable after being taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with non life-threatening.
The man who lived at the same address in North View has now been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Detective Superintendent Ken Donnelly said:
"We are investigating a violent death in tragic circumstances. Officers are working to establish the facts and piece together the events that led to Lesley's death."
