A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a young woman was raped inside an address in South Tyneside.

The incident happened at approximately 11.30pm on Easter Sunday.

She left the premises and a short time later, at around ten past midnight, she was walking along Sea Winnings Way in South Shields.

The 21-year-old woman sat down on a wall near to the Tesco Express store and was very visibly upset and was crying.

A man who she describes as a 'good samaritan' came up to her and asked if she was alright and asked if she'd called a taxi to get home before leaving her.

The woman called a taxi before reporting the incident to police.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and bailed pending further enquiries.

DI Phil Bond, leading the investigation for Northumbria Police, said:
"We want to trace this man who saw the woman clearly distressed and came over to ask how she was."

"We want to speak to him purely as a witness and would ask him to contact police."

"We'd also like to hear from anyone else who was in the area at the relevant time and who may have seen this woman."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
