Arrests after Tyne-Wear Derby

24 Newcastle and Sunderland fans are arrested after trouble at the Stadium of Light.

Rival fans threw seats at each other and Newcastle keeper Steve Harper appeared to be knocked over by a fan who ran onto the pitch, after yesterday's game which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has praised fans of the homeside who helped police track down some of the alleged trouble makers.

Northumbria Police say majority of the 48,000 fans at the game behaved well, but a small number were intent on causing trouble.

Officers say a new barrier system, which was in place to try to minimise disruption, was effective. The arrests are for offences including being drunk and disorderly, disorderly conduct and going into the playing area.
