£290m Plans To Speed Up A1

A1 at Felton

People in Northumberland are being asked for their views on big improvements to the A1.

The aim is to make the route safer, and to cut journey times.

The proposals say existing single carriageway sections would have extra lanes added between Morpeth and Felton and between Alnwick and Ellingham.

Junction upgrades, overtaking lanes and improvements to crossings north of Ellingham are also being looked at.

Highways England say the plans are designed to meet long-standing demand - for journeys on the A1 to be made faster and safer.

Project manager, Nanette Hoyle, said: "The improvements are designed to address journey time reliability, to allow traffic to overtake slow-moving vehicles like HGVs and agricultural vehicles, and as part of that improve safety.

"We plan to start construction on the north of Ellingham schemes in 2018. Following planning processes and a decision by the Secretary of State, we plan to start the dualling schemes by 2020."
