Police will carry out forensic work at a wooded area of Leigh where a man's badly burned body was found.

Authorities were called to a patch behind Pennington Road on Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 3pm, officers found the body of a man, who was "badly burnt'', police said.

Det Supt Jen Williams said: "Firstly, I want to stress that we are at the early stages of our inquiries.

"A team of detectives is now working to establish the identity of the man and investigate the full circumstances that led to his death.

"I know that residents will be alarmed by this incident, but I want to reassure the community that a thorough investigation is now taking place and there are extra patrols in the area.

"I would urge anyone who has information that can assist our inquiries to call us as soon as possible.''

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
