Police were called out to the Brighton Grove area in the early hours of Sunday after reports that a 22-year-old woman had been raped.
Earlier in the evening, the victim had been with friends in the Red Rum pub on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield.
She left the pub in the early hours and was walking alone along Brighton Grove when she was dragged down the side of a house and raped.
Superintendent Serena Kennedy, said: "We are at the early stages of the investigation so I cannot go into too many details about what has happened. People in the area will understandably be shocked to hear the news of this attack, but I would like to reassure them that we have extra officers on patrol and incidents such as this are rare in this area."
“If anyone has any information they think may help police with this investigation, please come forward and speak to us. I would also like to encourage women to be aware of their personal safety and be vigilant. Please do not leave yourself vulnerable by walking alone at night, always travel in a group with friends."
