A man is in hospital after he was shot in Preston.
It happened at around one o clock this morning in the Ribbleton Lane area.
Officers were called to Skeffington Road along with the ambulance service.
The 29 year old man is having surgery at the Royal Preston Hospital.
Ten minutes before the attack, police had stopped a group of four men on bicycles on Maitland Street. They cycled away, but following a search a gun was then found nearby.
Detectives believe the two incidents are linked.
A 25 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Neil Esseen said "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area this morning between midnight and 1:30am. If anyone witnessed any suspicious activity or heard a loud bang then I would ask them to get in touch.
"I understand that people could be nervous about contacting the police and if that is the case I would ask them to call the independent charity Crimestoppers. You will not have to give your name and will not need to go to court."
"Our initial enquiries have led us to believe that the people involved in this incident are known to each other. We have a large team of officers and staff working on this inquiry and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice."
