A man is in a coma after every bone in his face was broken.
The 41-year-old was found by a woman walking her dog on a footpath that runs between Travis Street and Ridling Lane in Hyde at about 8.30am on Sunday 3 July.
Every bone in his face was broken and he was taken to hospital where he remains in a coma in intensive care.
He is believed to have been in the Nelson Street area at about 11.45pm the previous evening, but what happened next is unclear.
Police are now appealing to anyone who has information to come forward.
Detective Constable Julie Howell, from Ashton-under-Lyne CID, said: "We do not know how this man came to be on the footpath or how he sustained his injuries, so we are asking for the public's help to piece together exactly what happened.
"Clearly, the level of injuries he has sustained means he must have suffered significant trauma but we cannot say whether he was attacked or fell.
"He is in a very serious condition in hospital so we need the public's help to establish the circumstances.
"I want to appeal to anyone who might have been in this area between about 11.45pm on the Saturday evening and 8.30am the following day who might have either witnessed what happened, or saw this man, and can help us with our investigation."
