Police got a call at 12.40am on Tuesday saying a silver Astra had hit a tree on Bury Road in Radcliffe and the three men inside had then been attacked.
It is believed the car had been pursued by two other cars before it hit the tree and the men in the vehicles then got out and attacked the crash victims with baseball bats and knives.
A 30 year-old man from Bolton suffered multiple fractures and swelling on the brain and is now in a life-threatening condition. Two other men suffered minor stab wounds and a cut to the head.
Detective Chief Inspector Lynne Vernon, of Bury CID, said: "This was an exceptionally violent incident that will quite rightly shock the community in Radcliffe.
"One man is now fighting for his life and two others received less serious injuries. We are at a very early stage of the investigation and cannot speculate on what led up to this incident. We also do not have a full description of the pursuing vehicles.
