A CCTV image has been released to try and identify an Asian woman found dead on a road in Longsight.

Police were called to Upper Brook Street in Longsight yesterday morning to reports a woman's body was in the road.

The woman's described as Asian, wearing gold bangles on each wrist, with a pierced nose, a toe ring and was wearing yellow-coloured Asian clothing.

She is also believed to have had a black handbag, which has not yet been traced.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in police custody.

Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry from Longsight police station said: 'We have released CCTV images and a detailed description of the victim in the hope that someone will recognise her and get in touch with us.

'We have also released the image of a man we are keen to speak to.  This man has picked up the victim's shoes and may also have picked up the victim’s handbag in good faith.

We would urge him to contact the police as soon as possible as this handbag will hold the key to who she is.

We have currently not had reports of any missing people in the area, and we would urge anyone who has concerns to call us as soon as possible.

I understand the community will be very distressed and I want to reassure local residents that we have a team of very experienced officers working on this investigation.'
