A teenager is fighting for his life in hospital after a fight broke out in Bolton town centre.

In the early hours of Saturday a nearby police officer saw an argument between two groups of men on Bradshawgate.

One of those involved, a 17-year-old boy, was punched in the face during the fight and fell to the ground, hitting his head.

He was taken to hospital and is currently being treated for a serious head injury. His condition is described as critical.

One man was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody for questioning.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jackson said: “We are in the very early stages of our inquiry, which is just a few hours old, and until we have spoken to everyone involved and taken detailed statements I would not want to speculate about what has happened.

“What we know is that there has been some sort of altercation which has resulted in a young man suffering a serious head injury.

“It is important we establish the facts and I would appeal to anyone who has information, or who witnessed the altercation itself, to come forward.”
