Raiders have shot a Staffordshire bull terrier dog and stabbed two men as they tried to rob two homes.
A 33 year old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being repeatedly stabbed when a gang of four or five men broke into his home on Haddon Street, Lower Broughton, in Salford, at around 8.20pm last night.
The man's Staffordshire Bull Terrier has had surgery to remove a bullet from its body, but is expected to survive.
A 35 year old neighbour was also taken to hospital with a stab wound to his hand after the gang then forced their way into his home.
The attackers had fled by the time armed response officers arrived.
Superintendent Mark Kenny said: "As soon as the report came into us armed officers were quickly deployed to the area, however the offenders had left.
"The investigation is at an early stage but we have a team of detectives investigating and we also have extra officers in the area today to reassure residents so if anyone has any concerns please speak to us.
"I would also urge anyone who has any information about those involved or the circumstances surrounding this incident to please get in touch."
