Merseyside Police are investigating alongside Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service following a suspected arson at a house in Toxteth last night, Monday 20 May.
At around 10.35pm, emergency services were called to Morton Street to reports of a fire at the rear of the premises, causing damage. The fire was extinguished and no persons were present.
Forensic, house-to-house and CCTV enquiries are ongoing and detectives are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
Detective Inspector Paul Speight said: "Thankfully nobody was at this address at the time but we believe this was a targeted attack which had the potential to cause devastation to any occupants and neighbours.
"If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around 10.30pm, or have home CCTV and live locally, please check and let us know.
"Anyone reckless enough to carry out such an attack needs to be removed from the streets so tell us what you know and we will do the rest."
