The smoke takes over the entire shop within seconds, which means any would-be-robbers can't even see their hands in front of their face - so cannot continue their raid.

All it takes is a push of a button, from a remote that the staff have.

Once the smoke goes off, the shop doors also go into automatic lockdown AND it alerts police.

Romil Patani, a spokesman for the jewellers, said many of the shops were using smoke devices.

He added: “When it goes off, you can see no more than an inch in front of you. It should be a good deterrent.

“All the shops have been upgrading their security – we are working with the police, and the police are working with us. Officers make themselves known to us when they are on patrol, it goes on throughout the day and night.”
