Twelve arrests in drugs crackdown

Another 12 people were arrested this morning in a drugs crackdown to tackle the misuse of controlled substances.

Warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act were executed across Leicestershire and eight men and four women were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply controlled drugs.

Searches were carried out at properties in Leicester, Nether Broughton, Blaby and Sileby.

The men, aged 18, 29, 31, 33, 34, 34, 47 and 50 and the women, aged 22, 23, 30, and 54, all remain in police custody.

Last week we arrested 27 people and interviewed one person voluntarily. Today’s arrests take the total number of people arrested or spoken to during the operation to 40.

Of those arrested 12 people have been charged and are currently going through the legal process. The remaining 16 people are either on bail or released pending further investigations.

Chief Inspector Steff Shellard from the force’s operations support department, said: “We are pleased with the success of this operation.  Today’s arrests take the total to 40 people, a great example of teamwork from various departments across all three force areas.

“During the four days of the enforcement activity we executed a number of warrants and carried out searches of those properties.

“We’d like to thank those communities who were affected by the police activity for their patience and understanding while officers carried out their duties. We hope the operation reassured the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, that we take the misuse of drugs extremely seriously and our efforts to tackle these crimes will continue.
