Two Charged Over Birmingham Baby's Murder

The sister of a one-year-old and her partner are charged with murder, after his death at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
14-month-old Santino Balaz, who is a Czech national, died at Birmingham Children's Hospital on New Year's Day.
He had been living in Brighton Road, Balsall Heath, until an emergency call to the ambulance service on 3.45pm on January 1.
West Midlands Police charged Tereza Lackova, aged 19, unemployed, of Brighton Road, Balsall Heath and Marek Holub, unemployed, aged 27, also of Brighton Road, on Monday 5 January.
They are both appearing before Birmingham Magistrates Court this morning.
Both had responsibility for the care of Santino Balaz at the time of his death.
Detective Inspector Justin Spanner from Force CID, who is investigating the death said: "We are awaiting further tests following a post mortem, Santino was found to have extensive injuries and fractures to several areas of his body. West Midlands Police is currently liaising with colleagues in the Czech Republic to trace Santino's mother, who is believed to have returned home in September last year."
