A man is in hospital with critical head injuries after a violent mugging in Birmingham city centre.

Police said the 23-year-old has been left fighting for his life as a result of the incident on Sheepcote Street on Friday.

The man had been walking by the canal, near the Distillery pub, at around 6.20pm, when he was approached by two men and a woman.

West Midlands Police said one of the men kicked the victim in his face and body before stealing items from him.

All three of the group then ran away up the canal towards the International Convention Centre.

The victim required emergency surgery on his head injuries and is still in a hospital high-dependency unit, where his condition is described as critical.

Police said the three suspects are all described as Asian and in their early 20s, with the woman wearing a fawn scarf around her head.

Detective Inspector Vanessa Eyles said: "It is terrible to hear that a young man who went out to socialise on a Friday evening has ended up fighting for his life in hospital.

"We urgently need to find out the identities of the three suspects and are appealing to people to come forward with any information that will help us to identify them."
