Family Escapes Fire at Their Home

An investigation has started into what caused a fire, which destroyed the roof of a family's house in Southampton.

They managed to get out of the mid terraced home in Shirley and crews put it out before it spread to any other houses. At control room operators were called to Atherley Road, Shirley at 13.43 on Sunday 19 June.

Crews from St Marys, Redbridge and Hightown were immediately mobilised to the scene along with the aerial ladder platform from Redbridge.  On arrival firefighters were faced with a well developed fire in the roof of a two story mid terrace house which measured 15m X 5m of brick construction.

The roof of the property was 100 percent damaged by fire, the first floor was 20 percent damaged by fire and water and the ground floor suffered water damage.

Area Manager and Officer in Charge, Tom Carr said, "Fire crews were faced with a well developed fire which could have easily spread to neighbouring properties.  Their swift action and coordinated approach meant that they were able to ascertain that no one was trapped in the property and quickly bring the fire under control. The aerial ladder platform assisted crews in attacking the fire from above. This incident could have been so much worse if it hadn't been for the hard work of the crews who were  in attendance at the scene."

The stop message was received at 16:21.  The cause in undetermined and a joint investigation will be carried out with the police.
