A woman has been sexually assaulted in Falkirk.

The victim is said to have suffered significant distress following the ordeal, which happened near a block of flats on Wallace Street at about 2.45am on Saturday.

Police Scotland said the unknown man struck up a conversation with the woman and later followed her as she walked along an alleyway, where he sexually assaulted her.

He was last seen walking onto Wallace Street before being lost from view.

The suspect is described as being white, about 5ft 8ins, with blonde/brown short hair, a pale complexion and a gaunt appearance.

He was wearing a light grey coloured jacket and spoke with a local accent.

Appealing for anyone with information to come forward, Detective Sergeant Steven Hoggan, of Falkirk police station, said: "This was an extremely alarming attack that brought significant distress to the victim.

"We are working closely with her as part of an extensive investigation into this very serious incident and I wish to pay tribute to the tremendous bravery she has shown in coming forward and reporting this crime.

"I'm appealing to anyone who lives or was in the area during the early hours of Saturday and who may have seen this man or remembers any suspicious behaviour to come forward immediately.

"Also, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect is asked to contact police.''
