Family Of Murdered Student Meets MP
23-year-old Anuj Bidve, was shot in the head as he walked through the Ordsall district with friends, He died a short time later in hospital.
Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, met the family after they told him they were worried about the police investigation into the murder.
Mr Bidve's father, Subhash Bidve, found out about his son's death on Facebook at home in Pune in India, before police in the UK could contact him.
Mr Vaz, the Labour MP, said: "I am pleased to welcome the Bidve family to Parliament.
"They have shown great dignity following the terrible circumstances of their son's death. This must be a very difficult time for them.
"I welcome the fact that Greater Manchester Police has arrested and charged a suspect within seven days of the event and that individual will face a full trial.
"We must reassure foreign students we are doing everything we can to ensure their safety in the UK.
"Following the criminal proceedings it will be extremely helpful if there is a full report into the circumstances of his death.''
Mr Bidve, described as a "promising and clever" student, was with a group of fellow Indian students visiting Manchester for Christmas.
20-year-old Kiaran Stapleton, from Ordsall, was remanded in custody charged with his murder, he will next appeared in court on March 20th.
Three other people who were arrested on suspicion of Mr Bidve's murder have been bailed until March pending further inquiries. A fourth man, aged 19, had his bail cancelled.
