We're always trying to blag ourselves a ticket to the hottest gigs around, so when Katy Perry was in town for her biggest London show to date, we couldn't resist heading along.
Where? Scala, London
When? Wednesday 24th September 2008
What was it like?
Her chart-topping single, I Kissed A Girl is fast becoming the song of 2008, but the question remains: is there more to her than her than lady lip-locking and can she cut it live? She answered both of these questions with a resounding yes at her biggest UK show to date at the Scala in London's Kings Cross. Bounding onto the stage with bags of energy, the twenty three year old Santa Barbara native quickly silenced her critics with a faultless set predominantly drawn from her new album, One Of The Boys.
What did she sing?
Ten of the twelve songs featured on her new album as well as a couple of extras - Use Your Love, a bit of a rock anthem from her Ur So Gay digital EP plus an encore of Brick By Brick, an as-yet-unreleased acoustic ballad.
What was the best bit?
She was clearly thrilled to be there and didn't for one minute try to hide her enthusiasm - from climbing on top of the speakers (we hope she had insurance) and putting on a pair of over-sized sunglasses to well, babbling incoherently. Choice quotes included 'I wish I could take you all home with me in my suitcase, but you might not all fit so I'd have to chop you up into little pieces' and 'yeah I kissed I girl and I touched her boobies 'cos she was hot!'. Right, whatever you say love...
Song highlights included her next single, Hot N Cold which had everyone moshing with delight and Thinking Of You, which she performed solo with her acoustic guitar, proving that she's got the talent to match the controversy.
What was the worst bit?
Katy's live show wisely skipped over two of the album's weaker tracks, I'm Still Breathing and Lost and, while the crowd was generally very receptive to her material, a cover or two wouldn't have gone amiss to hold the interest of her less die-hard fans.
Where can I hear more?
Katy doesn't currently have any UK shows lined up but, in the meantime make sure you do the next best thing and check out her album, which is out now.
