Troye Sivan's new emotional ballad about a past relationship is causing some speculation.
Can we just take a second to talk about how perfect Troye Sivan's brand new song 'The Good Side' is, please? It's great isn't it?! Yes! Great! But what does it all mean?!
Many believed the heartfelt ballad to be about his current boyfriend Jacob Bixenman but thanks to a deeper dive into the lyrics, fans now think the song is about Connor Franta, the YouTuber who Troye was heavily rumoured to be dating back in the day. (They never confirmed their relationship, by the way.)
In Troye's interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, he explains that the song is almost an apology letter to his ex-boyfriend. He dishes on the meaning behind the lyrics of the song, explaining that nine times out of ten, "someone is gonna get it rougher" at end of the break up.
At the end of their relationship, Troye went on tour, saw the world and fell in love again sooner than he expected - he got "the good side", while his ex presumably got the bad side of everything. Troye said that he hopes the song becomes a cathartic experience for the both of them.
In his lyric breakdown with Genius, Troye also explains that he does kinda feel guilty about the whole situation. He also explained that some of the lyrics call back to a few songs on his debut album Blue Neighbourhood that were written about the same boyfriend and the demise of their relationship.

Me in 2018, looking back at the years I spent joking over silly internet ships, realizing that Troye Sivan and Connor Franta were actually together and The Good Side is Troye’s apology to Connor through song pic.twitter.com/d8xqxJY4Br

Oh, and by the way, the lyric referencing "both of the rings"? Yes, Troye was referring to engagement rings but only in a figurative sense. An engagement was never truly on the cards.
